The Ultimate Skin Diet
All the products in the world won’t change the simple fact that when it comes to skin, you are what you eat. Sure, an arsenal of products certainly comes in handy in the quest for a perfect complexion (we wouldn’t be without them!) but you can eat your way to glowing skin too! Here, we share some skin-saving tips to help alleviate some common skin problems.
Calm sensitive skin
Load up on your ‘good’ fats and foods that are high in Vitamin B. Vitamin B helps to relieve dry, irritated skin. Foods rich in Vitamin B are the likes of salmon, tuna, almonds and sunflower seeds. Flax seed, walnuts, and olive oil are also great additions to your diet as they are loaded with good fats, which help rebuild cell membranes and irritation on the skin. To calm down particularly inflamed or irritated skin, generous handfuls of rasberries and chia seeds should be added into your diet. Just one teaspoon of chia seeds provides 2.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids – a super powerful anti-inflammatory that can help keep skin irritation-free. Raspberries on the other hand, contain ellagic acid, which is an antioxidant also high in anti-inflammatory properties to calm and prevent red inflamed skin.
Ward off wrinkles
Put down the retinol (for now) it’s true, certain foods are surprisingly powerful in fighting signs of ageing. Lucky for you, the summer season is the perfect time for indulging in them too, thanks to the abundance of their availability. Foods that are packed with the powerful UV fighting antioxidant vitamin C (like kale and all berries), as well as foods packed with collagen-boosting ingredients such as embryonic foods containing amino acids (think eggs, beans, and seeds), antioxidants (pomegranate and goji berries), and then our old friends the ‘good’ fats (walnuts and avocado) are all super foods for the skin when it comes to fighting wrinkles from the inside out. Think of these foods as having a natural skin smoothing effect. By incorporating a mix of such foods into your diet, it will help inhibit damage to collagen and work to ensure skin stays smoother for longer.
Even Out Skin tone
Back to the subject of retinol. As good as this super anti-ager is for wrinkles, skin experts also tout it as the saving grace of even skin tone! However, did you know there are plenty of foods that are packed with this too? Dark green vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli and beans, and orange-hued produce like apricots, melon and carrots are all super high in vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to regulate and improve the way in which our skin sheds dead cells, which overall, will lead to a more even skin tone and radiant complexion. Remember, raw is the best way to get the most vitamins out of these vegetables and fruit
